Gantt chartTasks and milestones

A Gantt chart is automatically created for each project activity. This graphically summarizes the project tasks and milestones.

The following information can be recorded on each project task:

  • Task title
  • Start date – The earliest date when allocations for the task can begin
  • Finish date – The latest date for task allocations
  • Resources required – This refers to people or fixed assets (such as equipment). Particular skills can be specified for human resource management purposes.
  • Allocated resources – People and resources allocated to the project activity. This list is initially empty and is populated during the allocation process.
  • Link to a parent task
  • Percentage of completeness – The task is marked as completed when the percentage is set to 100.

Resource management

If a resource is over-allocated, this will be highlighted on the Gantt chart and will appear in as an overload warning in the project summary. If the allocations do not cover the required amount of resource, the task is marked as ‘non-fulfilled’. If there is an issue with a particular resource (for example, the person is ill), the task is highlighted until the resource is reallocated.

Milestones

A milestone divides the project flow into separate phases. The milestone is connected to one or more tasks and has a due date. Depending on the current date and status of linked tasks, the milestone can have one of three status levels:

  • Incomplete – There are unfinished tasks but the due date has not yet been reached.
  • Overdue – The due date has passed but there are still unfinished tasks.
  • Complete – All tasks are finished.

If required, alerts can be set up to notify team members when the milestone status changes. Milestone status is also reflected in the project activity summary.
