Business Challenge

Formed in 1997 by the merger of English Wright and Brockman, a specialist non-life actuarial consultancy, and Matthews Consultants, a specialist reinsurance consultancy. EMB has expertise in all areas of non-life insurance. EMB specialises in pricing, reserving, capital modelling and reinsurance. EMB software Ltd, a division of EMB, is the UK ’s leading producer of non-life actuarial software. EMB has over 100 employees, including actuarial trainees, actuarial consultants, insurance analysts and software developers.

EMB has offices in the UK , Germany , and the USA with strong affiliated networks in Australia and South Africa . EMB also has plans to open offices in Korea and India during 2005.

Despite its expanding global workforce, a developing portfolio and a growing list of clients, EMB had a major problem. How to capture up to the minute information, share market intelligence, spread company news and developments throughout the organisation, whilst managing its documentation and communication process to its growing list of clients. EMB’s web site was becoming large and increasingly difficult to keep up to date and there was no Extranet set up.

It was agreed that a content and knowledge management system was required to build an Intranet, Extranet from the ground up and deliver the web site.

Knowledge Management Requirements

Key considerations were the proven robustness and scalability of Claromentis ™ , ease of management, and ease of use, with excellent documentation and tight integration with desktop development tools. EMB is building a large repository of documents, which was one of the main drivers of the project.

Starting the Project

Overcoming the Problems

Claromentis was able to develop the functionality to fit EMB’s specific requirements. EMB’s portfolio of services are expanding, with specific skills and expertise required within the organisation to deliver an individual client’s needs. With a workforce out in the field and spread across a number of offices, tracking skills within the organisation was a problem. Claromentis developed the skills tracking functionality to address this. By linking the tracking facility with the SMS messaging service a user can find the right colleague with the expertise to help them, pinpoint their location and contact them using the fully integrated text messaging system.

The Results

EMB was able to implement the software easily under the guidance of the Claromentis Team. The company’s development team received training for its power users then rolled out end user training internally. Since the implementation of Claromentis ™ , EMB has achieved the following:

•  A fully functional Extranet, Intranet and Internet site.
•  Knowledge management and sharing across the organisation.
•  A system for managing its large repository of documents.
•  An internal skills tracking system.
•  An internal communications system.
•  A holiday planning system across the organisation.
