Meeting Our Clients Needs

October 20th, 2011

Many organisations have been created from outdated market research and over analysis of market conditions, with large sums of money invested in creating and developing a business idea. A variety of top consultants are called upon to provide their ideas and opinions based on many years of experience and expertise, all of which hold the same overriding objective; to maximise profits. Many are able to declare their availability to companies, coinciding perfectly with their personal diaries.

However many successful businesses have stemmed from individuals accidentally stumbling across ingenious ideas, or through the shocking discovery that the product or service does not currently exist in the market place. They conduct market research through a number of web searches – a simple but yet powerful tool. These businesses however are undoubtedly more effective in providing valuable solutions which truly benefit the lives of many.

Claromentis was established in 1998 in response to a market place filled with inadequate software solutions, incapable of facilitating a variety of organisational needs and requirements due to their inflexible nature. They also came with hefty price tags making them available only to those with generous budgets. Claromentis therefore embarked upon a mission to create affordable software solutions that delivered real business value, available to a diverse range of companies regardless of their location

It was therefore essential that the Claromentis framework was able to fit the needs of a variety of organisations across multiple sectors, designed to also support any language.

Thirteen years on and this is no longer a mission but a reality, and is now at the core of what it is Claromentis actually represents. Here’s a few pictures of the team providing our clients all around the world with world-class service and support.

Impossible Triangle: Functionality-Time-Cost

October 10th, 2011

Recent economic conditions and pressure has made many businesses to re-think their priorities. In software development world it comes down to cost, time and functionality.

In ideal world all projects would have realistic deadlines, enough resources to do the entire features listed in the functionality requirement. However in the real world this is almost never happened. The real world demand compromises and faced with constant changes.

Diagram above illustrates “The Impossible Triangle” showing the relationship between Functionality, Cost and Time. As a software company we’re constantly under pressure to deliver project on time on-budget and fit for purpose but in reality it is nearly impossible to fix all three aspects in a project.

For illustration, it is possible to work on a fix amount of cost and fixed number of features & functionality  (assuming they are clearly defined) but time to complete the project will have to become variable. In many cases with the software development we don’t know the problem until we’re halfway down with the coding work.

On the other hand, it is possible to fix cost and having an exact date on project delivery but there will be some functionality trade-off.

In many cases, throwing additional resources in the mid-project is not as straightforward throwing more bricklayers to build a wall as illustrated by Dilbert:

In my opinion the role of Project Management in the software project are undervalued. A good software Project Manager is incredibly rare. It is disheartening to know that according to research by Dr John McManus, only one in eight IT projects can be considered as truly successful (1998-2005).

On the bright side, In the recent years we’ve seen the rise of Prototyping  and implementation of Agile methodologies, which in Claromentis we’re proudly adopting and continue to learn from mistakes and “Keep Moving Forward”.

Note: “Keep Moving Forward” is a tagline borrowed from Disney Pixars Movie – Meet the Robinsons. There is an interesting scene from the movie when the Robinsons family rejoices and celebrated “failures” more than “success”.

Analysing your Intranet

October 5th, 2011

It is undisputed that the majority of organisations expend vast amounts of time and resources on their corporate websites. Internal meetings are held to debate the most appropriate colour scheme to coincide with the brand, while content is meticulously planned out with dog eared thesauruses tossed aside until the next content review.

Not surprisingly, this concerted emphasis has resulted in the creation of a targeted communication tool developed to ultimately increase their profitability. However would the outcome be similar if an analytical approach was adapted to the organisations intranet system? Claromentis strongly believe if just a fraction of this effort was placed upon analysing your intranet, your organisation would benefit greatly.

Although it may not be immediately obvious, intranet analytics are fast becoming a vital source of guidance for many organisations. A systematic understanding of how employees are using the intranet is the most important resource available to an organisation to improve its internal communication and to successfully turn their intranet into a tool for increasing business productivity and awareness.

Intranets are a substantial internal investment and, like any investment, being able to analyse progress overtime and to watch it grow from strength to strength is a most satisfying feeling. One of the most important points to remember about intelligent investments is that they will always reap rewards, with growth measurable as the year’s progress.

Content Management
The ability to track user patterns enhances the quality of the information supplied. A clear indication of out-dated or irrelevant content can be highlighted through the percentage of users actually reading the information. Each topic can be analysed and monitored with the least popular pages visible and clear, appropriate action can be taken to modify content to make it suitable and user-friendly.

Search Capabilities
If users are unable to locate or access relevant information, they will become frustrated and despondent about their intranets ability to provide them with unambiguous support and guidance. This will result in reduced usage of the intranet. A comprehensive search feature was therefore essential when our field-leading team of developers created this application.

Continued Intranet Improvement
Intranet analytics quantifies how effective the intranet is in terms of supporting business activities. Intranet analytics are especially important for building a model of user activity patterns, which can be analysed in graph form over a specified time period. Changes to the existing intranet can also be effectively measured.
